...and build an LMP1 contender, already.
Their size and status commands more than some GT racing.
A great manufacturer doesn’t wait for a reset of the rules. It just goes there, works with the existing rules, catches up and wins.

It’s this approach that killed them in F1, unfortunately. They had a good opportunity but it didn’t fit the plan so they made an even bigger gamble and lost.
BMW not having any involvement at the top level of motorsport is a real shame, especially when their two competitors are leaders of their respective disciplines.
Also, that BMW M livery is too awesome. I think the similar colours are why I like the Williams Martini livery so much in F1.

To play Devil’s Advocate, what would they benefit from joining the LMP classes?
I personally would like to see more LMP teams (I’d love to see Sauber come back with Mercedes power like the C9 of old), just stirring up discussion on the topic.

That was 16 years ago, when cars still looked like this.

There’s a lot a manufacturer can learn by building a P1 car, and from overcoming the challenges that appear in the process of building and running such a car.
There’s also the technology relevance and the exposure of the series.

I think Mercedes should enter LMP1, rek everything, and then make a hybrid hypercar

Old reply, sorry.
They’re capable of winning Le Mans, and certainly they have come close to Ferrari in 2003, but BMW became legends in touring cars, so it makes sense that they push GT and DTM more, and why I’d rather see them return to WTCC with the 3er or be a factory BTCC team with the M2.
That said... there is a way for them to soup up the i8's drivetrain, get some scrap from Ingolstadt or Weissach, come up with a wicked chassis, go to WEC, and dance with Audi, Porsche, and Toyota. But they can’t do it immediately like you say, and instead use Haas F1’s model and strategy so they’re prepared in case Audi suddenly leaves or Peugeot returns (or both).
Still, I think the thing that you should want is to see the M6 GTLM be an M6 GTE. They got veteran drivers and crew, and they’re not too shabby at Le Mans. Besides...
Corvette’s paired with Porsche, and of course Ford has Ferrari to deal with.
